I recently moved out of my apartment and my former landlord is claiming I left the living room carpet in conditions that are not normal wear and tear. Because of this, they are charging me to replace the entire carpet. Yes, the carpet had a few light stains(dirt marks) on it in the entrance way, however they never attempted to steam clean the carpet and just replaced it based on an opinion that the satins would not come up with steam cleaning. I lived there for almost 3 years. I doubt its possible to have light carpet in Pittsburgh Pa stay perfect over a 3 year period without any light dirt marks on the entrance way. I have been told by numerous people to take them to small claims court that have seen the pictures. I feel at the most I should have only been charged for the square footage in the living room. Not the entire apartment. Also I hear numerous people ask "what does the lease state?". Well I had a lawyer look over the lease and it does not say I am responsible to replace the entire carpet. Just that I need to repair any damages. Whats the chances that the judge will hold me to the entire carpet replacement? Is this worth fighting? Anyone have similar experiences? Ive already tried to settle without legal action. They will not budge. Please help!
Note: This is a large apartment company. Not a random landlord.
